Seasonal Celebrations ~ Summer
the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.
~ James Dent
Summer days in my Georgia (8a) garden are hot and humid. The best way to enjoy these type of days are with a glass of ice cold tea with fresh mint leaves from the garden or some freshly squeezed lemonade and taking a seat in the woodland garden. More than ever, one definitely appreciates the shade of all the trees at this time of year.
During the summer months we take a break from the heavier gardening chores and planting. Necessary weeding and watering are done in the early morning hours. Followed by our daily harvest in the kitchen garden. Here is what we are growing this season:
~ Fruit ~
Blueberries, Raspberries, Blackberries, Strawberries, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Figs, Pears, Plums, Persimmon
~ Vegetables ~
Green beans, cucumbers, summer squash, tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, gourds,
If there is magic on the planet, it is contained in the water.
~ Loren Eisley
In summer we also celebrate water!
Playing in the river
building sandcastles at the beach
and pool time.
During summer break we travel to the Mississippi coast, the hills of North Carolina and the shores of Lake Michigan visiting family and friends. Our travels provide an opportunity to visit many gardens both public and private. I love finding inspiration in these gardens that I can bring home to my garden.
How are you celebrating the summer season? I am linking with Gardens Eye View for Seasonal Celebrations in this companion post to Lessons Learned.
Enjoy your summer!
Karin
Summer was officially over for us 5 days ago but we have remnants of the season. There are still plenty of sweet ripe mangoes, watermelons, cantaloupes, "sineguelas" (spanish plum), guava, "singkamas" (jicama or mexican turnip) and "duhat" (java plum).
ReplyDeleteOh i can see your first visitors are from my country, haha! I love to walk on those paths under the trees with slices of that big red watermelon, which i also want to dig my face into, my favorite! Hmmm, yummy!
ReplyDeleteI love the "playing in the river" photo!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful woodland. I'd love to have the close to me.

Karin, your wooded area is similar to mine, though mine is more of an incline. I am grateful for the shade in the summer.
ReplyDeleteWater is always in our lives, I love living on the lake, watching the water change with the seasons. It is very calming.
Lovely celebration especially water...anything to cool off...that ice tea with fresh mint brings back the memories and I adore that woodland garden....perfect ways to celebrate the season...thx Karin for linking in!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the photos of your boys. It looks like they're having a great time in all the photos.
ReplyDeletethis is a feel good post! love the kids in the water, the woodland garden (which is very similar to mine), watermelon, peaches and iced tea...that's summer. my daughter finishes up with exams tomorrow - let the sleeping late begin!
ReplyDeleteOne of the many joys of summer is not hearing the alarm clock or having a schedule! And, I am sure your daughter is thrilled to have exams behind her!
DeleteI spend my summer just relaxing and exploring the area around me, since there is so much to do here. One of my favorite non-gardening things to do is to head into DC and use my researchers card to sit in the main reading room of the Library of Congress and just read. It is an exquisite pleasure. :o) I love the long shots of your woods. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds divine! SO much history available at your finger tips!
DeleteI loved your images of summer, Karin. The kids especially having fun and enjoying the warm days. But I have ti admit, I too am drawn to the shade and tall trees. It looks so inviting.
ReplyDeleteKarin, I don't know that I have ever seen your woodland garden on my visits. I bet it is a great place to head when the sun is high in the sky. I try to get al the heavy gardening done in June, because July is just so darn hot that I hardly garden.
ReplyDeleteWe have yet to decide how to spend our summer holiday. Swimming, beach time and eating watermelon all sound like summer things to do.
p.s. Love the shot of your son jumping into the water! I fell refreshed just looking at it!
Thanks Jennifer. I hardly ever show long shots of my garden because there is still so much to be done. It is 4 years old now but 2.5 acres is a lot to design and plant. The plants are still maturing and often in the wide shots it still looks very empty. I probably should make an effort to show more so that the change is documented. I hope you find some fun things to do on your holiday!
DeleteI'm a bit late, but I'm so glad i did not miss this great post! I love your woodland with its wide path and tall trees! And you have reminded me it is time for watermelon!
